Future plans

I thought it useful to post up a list of my future plans for over the next few years.

iPhone App Store

  • I will be posting updates as soon as I can get them coded and uploaded to iPhone Connect for customers.
  • With each app and update I’ll be learning more and more of Objective-C, Xcode and iPhone development so that should help me in the long run produce more professional and better developed apps for release.
  • The pricing for apps are going to differ from free to an amount I feel worthy of the time put into the app.
  • I will be learning throughout the year and for a number of years, as long as I can go for producing apps on my own, as a team, or part of a company.
  • Money from the first apps is going towards a new iMac where I will developing more applications and giving me a better and quicker machine to develop my apps on.

Mac OS X

  • You may have briefly seen in an older post, but I will be making a few apps for Mac in the future once the iPhone development has properly kicked off. I will be posting updates on this later on this year, probably after June 09 you will hear any bulk of news about this.
  • It’s too early to say at the moment, but I have plans to develop a program for the Mac which will coincide with an app on the iPhone, bring users together in one place… online.

Windows

  • Although it may not seem it, but I will be creating a number of highly developed Windows programs in languages such as Java, C++, C# or whichever suits the purpose best.
  • Development of these programs probably will not start till late 2010 due to a busy couple of years for me.
  • I will be doing a course on Computer Science at university to further my study into programming which will be based on Windows and will help me develop better programs for the Microsoft user base out there.

Another Mobile OS or Platform?

  • Android?
  • I may start learning and developing for the Android OS once it picks up, however I’d have to save up for a development device.
  • But who knows?! I will keep you all posted when news becomes available on my behalf.

iMood – Coming to the App Store

iMood iPhone App

The app I have made is now pretty much ready for release! I’ve ticked all the boxes and the app should be on the way to the App Store soon. Any future updates will be posted on here and on Twitter first, so there is no need to go to any other websites (even the website for my team as this is usually updated later on).

Release Date: February 2009

iMood is an application to help you show others your feelings, or an easier way to communicate. iMood is ideal for situations where you can’t talk (i.e. Library, Classroom), or for in places where you can’t hear each other (i.e. Gig, Concert, Club). You have two options on the main page, Moods and Chat. Moods is the section where you can choose a large emoticon and even have the choice to add your own text to it. The chat section is a place where you can really just communicate by words. After typing in your message, you can have the choice of colors and speed, and let it scroll across the iPhone’s large screen in landscape mode.

iPhone 2.2 Firmware – New Features

Apple has already started seeding 2.2 Beta firmware to certain developers. Apple have yet to give a release date for the firmware, however developers have been giving us the lowdown on a few new features hidden within the firmware. Here are some as follows:

Japanese Emoji Icons

These Emoji icons are very popular amongst the Japanese SMS’ers. Apple has now included these in the new Firmware and includes around 460 of these emoticons.

Ability to disable the Auto-Correction Feature

Users will now be able to turn the Keyboard’s Auto-Correction feature off. This has been requested by many iPhone users as being annoying and correcting words they’d like to use (as of yet you can’t add words to the Keyboards dictionary).

Google Street View

It has also said that Google Street View will be supported with the iPhone’s Google Maps. This was a feature demoed at the conference over the new Google Android phone and will be coming to the iPhone.

Now run Official Apps in the background! (Jailbroken iPhone)

image It’s out! It’s available! You can download an app which enables you to run applications in the background.

The Official iPhone Firmware currently cannot run applications in the background which is why Steve Jobs had put forward the update (soon to be released) where apps can give out ‘push notifications’ which are similar to the SMS or Email notifications. However, this has not yet been released and has passed the deadline for September from the last WWDC.

This new App called Backgrounder is only available for Jailbroken iPhones using Cydia to install it. Backgrounder is a Mobile Substrate-based extension to Apple’s SpringBoard  application launcher.

To enable backgrounding for the app you are currently running, you simply press and hold the home button until a message pops up telling you that “Backgrounding Enabled”. The iPhone then returns you back to the SpringBoard to let you do whatever else you’d like to do. Then to go back on the App, you just click back on the App Icon and it will load up (faster), from where you left off and, for example, still download/uploading something etc.

To disable the backgrounding for the app you had enabled it for, you again, press and hold the home button until the message pops up telling you “Backgrounding Disabled.”

It’s as simple as that! No task managers to worry about or anything! One last thing… Apple had disabled the backgrounding in the official firmware due to it hogging memory, battery life and other issues. Run it how you like, but if you don’t have a charger nearby, you may need to think twice about how much you use it and for which apps.

Google Android Software Launch

Google Android – An open source OS for mobile phones.

Google has launched it’s new open source operating system for mobile phones. It’s first phone to use this OS? T-Mobile HTC. (Named G1). This phone will be going on sale in October!

The OS is open for any developers to create applications for and the OS itself can be tailored for individual phones, networks and potentially user. Thirty four companies, including Google, have formed an alliance to promote Android and to develop features and handsets to take advantage of the platform. These companies include handset manufacturers such as LG HTC, Motorola and Samsung, chip firms such as Qualcomm and mobile networks like T-Mobile and China Mobile.

Google have made a Market for downloading applications, just like Apple’s App Store for the iPhone. However, unlike Apple, Google’s market will not require approval for applications.
